Understand the Fee Waiver (FW) category, eligibility, benefits, and admission process in colleges.
FW Full Form stands for “Fee Waiver”. It is a special category in engineering, pharmacy, and other technical colleges where students from economically weaker backgrounds are given exemption from paying tuition fees.
The FW category refers to students who are granted a tuition fee waiver based on their family income and merit. Under this scheme, the tuition fee is either fully waived or partially reduced, while students still need to pay other fees like examination, hostel, or library charges.
In engineering and technical college counselling (like JEE Main, UPTAC, or state polytechnic admissions), “FW” seats are specifically reserved under the AICTE Fee Waiver Scheme. These seats are allotted to meritorious students from families having an annual income of less than ₹8 lakh (as per AICTE guidelines).
| Criteria | Details |
|---|---|
| Family Income Limit | Less than ₹8 lakh per year |
| Admission Mode | Through counselling (JEE, State CET, etc.) |
| Seat Percentage | Up to 5% of total intake |
| Applicable Colleges | AICTE-approved Government and Private colleges |
The FW scheme helps deserving students continue their education without the burden of tuition fees. Here are some of the major benefits:
To apply for FW seats, candidates must choose the “Fee Waiver” option during online counselling. The verification of income certificate is mandatory. Seat allotment is made according to merit and availability of FW seats in the chosen course and college.
Students under the FW category must maintain good academic performance. In case of repeated failure or low attendance, the college may revoke the fee waiver benefit.
| Feature | FW Seat | General Seat |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition Fee | Waived Off | Fully Payable |
| Eligibility | Low Income + Merit | Merit Only |
| Seat Availability | 5% of Total Intake | Remaining 95% |
| Documents Required | Income Certificate | Not Required |
